Details Digest: Truly an American design, the Buffalo Nickel also referred to as the Indian Head Nickel left its mark on American History.

The Buffalo Nickel was designed by sculptor James Fraser in 1912. Fraser’s inspiration for the design stemmed from his firsthand witness of the foul treatment and suffering of Native Americans and bison growing up in the Midwest.

The change of the Nickel was part of a campaign to beautify American coins. Released in 1913 and retired in 1938, replaced by the Jefferson Nickel, collecting the Buffalo Nickel is popular amongst intermediate and advanced coin collectors.

Fun Fact: The bison that appeared on nickels in 1913 was the first animal on a circulating American coin that was not an eagle.
