She Did That!

Althea-Gibson.jpg

Pioneer. Trailblazer. Tennis Legend & Professional Golfer.

Althea Gibson—born as a small-town girl in Silver, South Carolina in 1927. Althea popped off and paved the way by becoming the first black American to win the French Open (1956), US Open & Wimbledon single titles in 1957.

During the hardships of segregation, Althea broke barriers and became the first black athlete to cross the color line of international tennis. In the early 1960s, Althea also became the first black woman to compete on the Women’s Professional Golf Association tour.

Today, this Queen is recognized and remembered amongst the top-ranked tennis players in the world. In 1971, she was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame and the International Women’s Sports Hall of Fame in 1980.

We commemorate and celebrate Althea today by carefully curating this beautiful color block sweater, named after the tennis legend herself!
